Boxing, Baseball, Football, Hocky, ping pong, chess and curling are reconized sports, is Mixed Martial Arts?

Mixed Martial Arts
blogbaba asked:

Would you consider Mixed Martial Arts a sport? Or is it just a form of violent entertainment like professional wrestling.

Professional wrestling (as entertaining as it may be) is all a show. MMA is actual fighting and I would consider it a “sport”

As a matter of fact I saw the highlights from UFC 71 on ESPN this past Sunday which as far as I know ESPN only reports on sports.

MMA is a sport. The fastest growing sport since outside of NASCAR which IMO is not a sport. Yes it is violent but so is boxing, football, soccer, baseball (when the benches clear), hockey and so on. The difference is MMA is a combat sport. More combative than boxing and wrestling. It utilizes all ranges of hand to hand combat.
Pro-Wrestling is sport/entertainment with basically means its just a show. Physically demanding but staged.

It is absolutely a sport. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant and knows nothing about it. It is just as much of a sport as boxing.

Of course it’s a sport. What a weird question. Is K1 a sport? Is boxing a sport? Is wrestling a sport? Is Mui Tai fighting a sport? It simply aggregates several sports into one. Again, weird question.

If MMA is not a sport and ping pong or poker is then there is seriously something wrong. One thing that will be interesting is to look at the sport in 10 years. The UFC keeps getting bigger and Strikeforce could start to gain a little marketshare. This could lead to a larger overall pool of fans as MMA hits mainstream America more each month.
