If your martial art does one-on-one, hand to hand combat, get in close to taller opponents. You can easily punch them, but their longer arms and legs can't reach you. Also, work on flexibility so you can kick high if your worried about height. Remember that size doesn't matter, good technique matters. These tips have worked for me, and I'm 5'0 in a class mostly of men 5'8 and above.

I just started and I really like it. I never expected I would be good at it, or develop a likeness for jiu-jutsu. Working with other girls instead of guys that baby you is nice too.

"Sparring"- that is, light fighting- is the best way to learn. Spar with as many people and as many different styles as you can. Everybody is different, and it is challenging and fun to discover people's weaknesses and strengths, and how to exploit them. Good luck. You'll have some fun with those bruises.

Maybe you could try finding some MMA tips on youtube. I saw a few clips with a female instructor showing some beginning Muay Thai exercises. I'm currently learning MMA stuff through youtube, i think its helpful and its good exercise, i'm sure it would be great for females too.
