Do you think the De La Hoya vs. Mayweather fight was enough to give boxing a boost over Mixed Martial Arts?

Mixed Martial Arts
Dano asked:

Considering the star power behind the event, not only with its fighters, but with the celebrities, et cetera in attendance, I personally thought it turned out to be a “dud”. Its one thing to have two highly respected fighters compete, but it’s another to see one carry the action while the other “plays it safe” only to win off points.

Although I’m a fan of both boxing and Mixed Martial Arts, I don’t see boxing staging a major comeback anytime soon. Too many boxing fans (hardcore and casual) are disgruntled with the corruption and the overabundance of organizations. So bearing this in mind, do you (as martial artists) think that boxing will get swallowed up by the MMA scene?

I believe it’s only a matter of time, but I’d like to hear what other martial artists think considering how MMA has already changed the martial arts landscape…

NO. That was a great fight, but can you remember the last time you watched a “Super Fight”? UFC markets the right way and we get to see the best vs the best because its all under one roof. And now that they bought PRIDE, its only going to get better

No, boxers have a slight disadvantage because they only use their hands. However, most accomplished boxers have the most power punches than any martial arts. That is one of the reasons why so many martial arts incorporate the teaching of western boxing in their styles. Even the monks of shaolin have incorporated it.

I am a fan of both. I like boxing because theres no wrestling and laying around, thats so boring, it was cool about 60 ufc’s ago, but now we want more action, and i think that’s what will save boxing. If they can start swinging away, keeping the tempo up boxing will have a chance when people get bored of watching people roll around on the mat. Maybe if boxing lowered there ppv prices a little bit. I dont see MMA lasting as long as boxing.

I agree, the fight clearly showed De La Hoya being the more aggressive fighter, and throwing more punches, yet Mayweather won by points. I used to like boxing, but when even “superfights” don’t live up to the expectations, I am more inclined to watch mma or k-1 fights.

I heard about it from someone last week. Saw the weigh in, and heard it was over today.
It was like all boxing promotions. Fighters who you have not seen because they have not been on anything but pay per vieew, fighting on a pay per view. yawn

No, not even by a long shot! The American people want to see someone get knocked out! Its possible in boxing to do enough punching to land points & win. It ain’t fun to watch but it is effective. UFC is against this policy & Dana White has been quoted numerous times that he wants fighters in the UFC that wanna fight to win, not fighters who hang back & score enough points to win. Plus boxing is so corrupt, no one cares about the sport any more.

Also UFC finally signed an HBO deal & I’m guessing, not assuming, UFC 72 from Ireland will be its first showing unless they put it on SpikeTV again which I doubt since it had mixed reviews because of the Lyoto Machida/David Heath fight being cut out in favor of a no-name undercard fight & the fact that there was too many commercials during the broadcast. UFC 70 was a gift to SpikeTV and they squandered it in my own opinion so UFC 72 might end up on HBO since a deal has been done. Now what does that mean, HBO Saturday Night Fights is in trouble, EliteXC on Showtime is in trouble, and if UFC 72 is in fact going to be shown on HBO & it goes off without a hitch since it’ll be an HBO production in association with Zuffa, expect to see international UFC & PRIDE events on HBO for free for now on.

no. mma is better and we saw a perfect example of that last night. Those guys could fight 100 times and mayweather would outpoint him each time, but if they fought mma anything could happen with the proper gameplan execution and mental preparedness. I grew up with boxing and I still do like it, but when I was a kid those guys were warriors like Duran, leonard, Hagla, Chavez, arguello, benitez, these guys are p u s s i e s. just kiddin but you know what i mean.

no it was not but it still showed it makes more money then a ufc main event just at the gates 19 million not including ppv sales but this is just one show for boxing and from here all it can do is go back down again so really boxing is on its way out but it will all ways be here but mma will be bigger and better than boxing the fights are better and nearly ever month there a fight that alot of people wants to see cause they have more fighters that the world likes than boxing and the only reason boxing can still make the big bucks cause some of the seating was 2,000 $ for a seat that’s crazy where you can get a great seat for 550 $ at a ufc show so you can say boxing is milking it right now but i like boxing been a fan since i was a child but i been doing martial arts at the age of 5 so you know where my heart is its in mma its the way of fighting. by the way chuck ortiz 2 made about 40 million on ppv sale not sure on the gate maybe 1 to 4 million.

I heard that the fans were chanting UFC over and over again after the fight. So it seems that even the boxing fans are saying they had rather watch the UFC.
