Get a base style, go to a teacher. Then take this "Base" and use every resource you can to get more and differing skills. If you have problems here, go to the local boys and girls club or YMCA. They all offer Martial Arts classes, and well not being the best choice, will still lead you to a group of great folks that not only want to teach, but have a base for you. This will teach you all the basics that you need to build a tool box of sort.
From these base skills your on your way, like Bruce Lee did with his base of Yip Man's Vin Tsun. A base lets you get an understanding of the needed skills like to understand telegraphing, bowling, proper countering and how to parry, etc....
And how not to be robotic, or worse yet, having severe openings that your unaware of.

Same way you learn to drive without somebody teaching you. By trial and error ( and crashing).

Former UFC champion Evan Tanner is self-taught, so it's not impossible, James Thompsom learned from watching dvd's (then again he usually loses).

You don't need a place that specifically trains MMA in order to learn, you could learn striking and grappling in different places.

Suggestions:

for striking: muay thai, kickboxing, boxing, sanshou, kyokushin karate.

for grappling: judo, brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling.

for a mix of striking and grappling: combat sambo, shidokan karate, kajukembo.

good luck!

good luck!

It would be helpful to have trainer, but you can also just adopt your own type of martial arts, like me. THe main thing to focus on is not looking cool, but knowing what type of movements are most effective on taking your enemys out. Get toughened up, get a punching bag, do push up sit ups, whatever to get you into shape so that you can deliver fatal puches and kicks. And strech, make sure you are able to menueavuer around your enemys. Oh, and it would hurt to look up pressure points, they can sure help in a fight

Some time ago I had bought a book on Karate and that book is so well written that it is possible to learn some of Karate to learn from there. However, you usually need a professional trainer to really get into the thing.
