How do I get started in the mixed martial arts scene?

Mixed Martial Arts
Sky Night City asked:

I don’t want fame, just want to train and compete for the sake of fun and self defense. I don’t mind starting backyard mma bouts with mats and stuff.

Don’t do the backyard thing. Especially without any training.

Go to an MMA gym. That’s always the first step. If you can’t find a dedicated MMA gym, look for a Brazilian Jiujitsu gym, or a boxing or kickboxing gym, or a Judo dojo. Train in a striking art and a grappling art.

Join a mma gym closest to u i go to team link in Ludlow Ma if your around the area we also have other locations in new england its its bjj but in ludlow it also gives muay thai… if u dont got 1 in your area go to a karate place there all over and a grappling place some colleges may let u train with them in wrestling but combine striking and grappling

You should read some of the fighters biographies to see how they got started. Not all joined MMA gyms. Some were wrestlers, some were teachers. You can learn from their past

As callsign says, don’t do the backyard thing.

I partially disagree with some of the advice here. A number of folks suggest going to an MMA school. Maybe, but…

I think you’d do better learning discrete martial arts, then pulling them together. Some MMA schools teach sloppy wrestling, sloppy BJJ, sloppy kickboxing, all mixed together. Now, admittedly, some will have different instructors–a top-notch BJJ person, a top-notch kickboxer, etc. So you learn the proper techniques from each. And that’s fine.

But if you can’t find that, then start off with one martial art, learn it reasonably well, then add another, and so on.

Good luck.
