As the name states (mixed martial arts), it’s a mixture of various martial arts, basically what’s effective. A good start would be to learn stand-up and grappling.

Stand-up recommendations:
muay thai
boxing
kickboxing
san-shou
kyokushen karate

grappling recommendations:
jiu-jitsu
judo
sambo
wrestling (greco-roman, not the wwe crap)

Learn at least one of each, and you should be ok, learn 2 of each, and you will have enough knowledge, the training part is up to you. Try to find a gym where they have MMA fighters, usually jiu-jitsu gyms will know.

look up BJJ it translates to the gentle art… try CSW look it up on the web more and more people are learning it. find a school that offers you to cross train within one school so you dont have to go a million places… modernma.com is a great example. look for active teachers that have ort still do compete at the correct level. judo and wrestling is great for take downs , csw for a million submissions and QUIcK reversals ….. mauy thai kickboxing for reaction time and explosive energy & combinations….. boxing stance is too square but good for conditioning. thats all you really need.

also LOOK for a school that advertises SUBMISSION FIGHTING.

Bradley,

Find out where some MMA schools are and ask them if they hold any smokers. “Smokers” are unsanctioned, unofficial fighting events where aspiring fighters like yourself get their start. Pretty much any one over 18 can sign up and fight. You do not even have to be associated with a trainer or school. In smokers, you can just be someone who wants to give it a try.

When you find a school that holds smokers, sign up for the next event and give it a go.

Keep em up and have fun!
