Is it risky for me to participate in a mixed martial arts match with my friends? (see details)?

Victor Z asked:

We will be having it in my friends backyard and there will be at least 10 other kids there. There will be no adults. However, the kids are pretty responsible.

it depends if they go to mma classes then they probley know how to restrain themselves and how to be careful. but, if its a bunch of kids that just want to fight thats way different. i would say for you and a friend its ok but someone you don’t know could be dangerous.

Of course its gonna be risky. To be on the safe side make sure you guys have on padding especially gloves because a person can easily break their knuckles when they punch someone in the face. It be safe to have on some type of shin guard for your legs, some head protector like in boxing, and definitely have on gloves. You can easily get cut more easily using mma gloves then boxing gloves so if you guys decide to do this you all better be careful because someone can go away with a broken nose or hand.

It should be supervised by an adult in the event of a serious injury. Also the parents that own the property could be sued if someone is hurt.

Ask your martial arts instructor if they would be interested in hosting a mixed martial arts tournament. If so, they will probably want waivers signed in case anyone is hurt.

DO NOT do this without the supervision/permission of the parents who own the property.

there are reasons why these event are insured, its so the promoter does not loose every thing they own. in this case it could be the property owner, even though they are not there if someone gets hurt they still could get sued and loose every thing they have.
any responsible martial art instructor would not, ref or supervise the event. unless you all signed wavers and hand insurance for this. because they too can also be sued, as being the responsible adult.

most states if not all including canada have laws against such events for the very reason of people getting hurt.
even if the kids are responsible, you have no medical personal standing by or any qualified paramedic. that’s what the armature and professional fights have standing by encase of an emergency.

so no don’t do this

I’m not trying to be insulting, but that’s risky to the point of stupidity. MMA fighters train for years. They have to pass intensive physicals that often include blood tests and MRI or CAT scans. An athletic commission has to license them. There are doctors at ringside and a referee with special training in the ring or cage with them. I have my doubts that you guys even have the right protective gear. You are so completely over your head it isn’t even funny. Don’t do it, man. Even pros get hurt, break bones, suffer concussions, lose teeth, and spend time in the hospital. If it’s that dangerous for guys who train six hours a day, six days a week, for years and years, how dangerous do you think it’s going to be for a couple of untrained kids?

wear gloves it will prevent you from breaking bones in your hand

most likely your not walking away without bruises and maybe a little blood

also remember mouth guards and cups

you might say no ball shots but you still get hit there accidently
i have passed peoples guards while sparring and pulled myself up between there legs having all my weight press down on there balls
not intentional but it still happens

If the kids were really responsible they would realize that this is a risky, stupid idea.

Someone will eventually get hurt. His parents will probably sue your friend’s parents because it was in their backyard. They will have to hire a lawyer which will cost them a few thousand dollars unless they just let their home owner’s insurance cover it which will still cost them a few hundred in deductible and thousands in increased premiums over the next few years.

When someone does get hurt, which of you is a doctor, nurse, or EMT? Will you know how to deal with an injury until the ambulance arrives? It could be broken finger, a compound fracture that is bleeding, a concussion, or a broken back. You never know.

If you guys really want to fight each other that badly, join the school wrestling team. At least there you’ll have proper instruction, proper padding, proper safety gear, and supervision.
