Scared thoughts about the Mixed Martial Arts Gym I’m about to join?

Well I’m pretty young: 15 and very small only around 100 pounds. I’m about to join a local Mixed Martial Arts gym. I’m just wondering what is the environment like it your Martial Arts Training Gym? My gym has boxing, kickboxing, and jiu jitsu. Personally I’m a little scared because I think when I get in there I’m going to feel real out of place. How do classes work? What is the average class activites you do for such as a beginner? I don’ tknow I’m really confused and kind of scared because I know hardly any kids go to the gym but I really want to learn. I’d appreciate it if someone could tell me what’s it like to be in a Martial Arts Gym?

well if ur going 2 a martial arts gym then most of them know that u r a beginner and will try 2 teach u the basics 1st and then slowly teach u just think of this there r children in gyms that know how 2 do wonders i can’t even do because they practice and the gym tought them … every1 is nervous when they 1st enter a gym… by the way what gym is it?

Don’t worry man. If you’re new, people will know and try to help you out. For the first 2-3 months you’re probably going to be just doing basics, nothing too tough. In MMA, sparring is a part of the game, but it’s never to hurt anyone, only to improve your game. MMA, like any other art, deals mostly with technique, and that’s what people are working on. No one in there is actually ‘fighting’ unless it’s established as such, and that’s usually in competition.

Now don’t get me wrong, mma, like any other art, is hard work. Moreso probably because it’s based on what works and proving that it works. But if you’re practicing it for any other reason, you should take another art. However, once you get a feel of what’s going on and get comfortable with your own movement, you’ll feel great that you gave yourself such a challenge.

In my school, the environment is pretty friendly and family like. We treat each other like partners and not opponents so everyone is focused on tryin to make each other better. We elevate the speed and power and intention of our attacks only when we feel our partner can perform the technique adequately. Against students who have some experience, we usually attack with speed and power that is slightly beyond what our partner can handle sometimes, so that our partner keeps working to get better and better at the technique.

As a beginner, you will probably not be given stuff to do that is too challenging at first. Your teacher will want to guage you and your body to see what you can handle and what you cannot. He will then train you accordingly, giving you what he feels you can handle or what he feels will comfortably challenge you. Remember, you won’t grow unless you are challenged.

It’s ok to feel nervous and scared. Trying something you’ve never done before…ESPECIALLY martial arts is a big step and it takes brave person to step into class for the first time. Rest assure that every student in that school and even the teacher, at one point in their liives, has felt exactly what you are feeling.

The only difference between the hero and the coward is the hero feels the fear and does it anyway.
