For striking: muay thai, boxing, sanshou, kyokushin karate.
For grappling: judo, brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling.
For a mix of grappling and striking: combat sambo, shidokan karate, kajukembo.

poser join a gym, one that has fighters and have ground skills and stand up skills. Stay any from Mcdojo’s who offer mma as a secret advance training.

Don’t bother with all this Martial arts stuff as none of it will help you in a real fight. Yes it looks fancy in all the films but they are not real.
Instead get into boxing as all it takes is to know how to throw a good punch and the other guy will be down and out.

First of all learn a base dicipline and master it. BJJ, wrestling, Muay Tai/kickboxing etc. Then think about diversifying. Learn as much about as much as you can, thus preparing you for anything. MMA is so unpredictable, having a little knowledge in multiple areas is key. But if I had to name one, Brazilian Jui-jitsu. With this, size means little. Royce Gracie tapped out many men that would have killed him in a kickboxing match. Recent case in point…Frank Mir’s submission of Brock Lesner.

Obviously it is good to have more knowledge and there is no full stop in learning martial arts. but please bare in mind, to mastered 1 martial art, takes years to do it sometime takes forever. learn as many as you can…and i would suggest Silat Melayu – originated from ancient Malaysian and Indonesian civilizations self defense & survival with soft & smooth style/dance. well, based on my uncertified experience as beginner in martial arts, it is much easy for me to learn from soft/smooth basic style to hardcore rather than the opposite way. you’ll feel tense when learning the opposite way. for example – a baby will start with crawling(soft/slow but yet building up the elbows,arms,knees,legs & chest muscles – i would say from head to toe) then only to walk/run(harder but yet building up only legs & knees muscles). once they know how to walk/run, it is not easy for them to go back to the beginning – crawling…they’ll feel the tense…feel me?

MuayThai and wrestling have done real well for me. Within the last year I have started learning BJJ.
