Where did Mixed Martial Arts originated?

Mixed Martial Arts
hinata_hater h asked:

I need to do a Cultural Artifact speech for my Comm class. And I have decided to talk about Mixed Martial Arts. But during my research, I can’t seem to find a definite answer as to what culture MMA originated from. I’ve read it started in Greece, Rome, Italy, etc..

Can anyone help pin point this for me? It’d be very helpful since I am supposed to talk about a culture different my own (US)..

Thanks in advance.
So from reading all of your answers, would it be a good idea for my Speech, to talk about how all of these different styles originated from different cultures, and the end result and its worldwide impact is the development of the UFC?

Almost impossible to pin point.
As Humans the world over, by their very nature even if subconsciously realize their own weaknesses and seek out different styles to compensate.

But the most famous in the last 70yrs has got to be Bruce lee.

Although many have done it before he was born obviously.

Best wishes :) ***

Pankration was the martial art of the Greeks that involved kicking, punching, grappling, and submissions.

Bruce Lee philosophized upon mixing different styles and wrote about it.

Modern MMA originated with “challenge matches” between the Gracie family and practicioners of other styles starting in the 70’s. That led Rorion Gracie and Art Davies to form the original UFC in 1993 as a business venture to showcase the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu style created by the Gracies. The original point of UFC was to create more interest in Jiu Jitsu as the Gracies were founding more schools around the US.

The mixed martial arts in the United States originated with Bruce Tegner’s JUKADO, a mixture of JUdo, KArate, and AikiDO in 1950.

Other mixed martial arts appeared as U.S. veterans from the Orient returned home and began teaching the martial arts they learned in Okinawa, Japan, Korea, and or China.

So you have mixed martial arts like: San Yama Bushi Jiu-Jitsu; Ketsugo; Miyama Ryu Jiu-Jitsu and so on.

Then in 1968 Aaron Banks hosted his mixed martial arts matches in Madison Square Garden. These bouts lasted until the early 1970s where it was concluded that there is no ‘best’ style but it all depends on the practitioner. This was supposed to have settle the issue of the best martial art.

Then in the early 90s a family of Johnny come lately’s touted Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as the best and began challenging second rate or McDojo students and then competed against only selected contestants.

This one upmanship eventually led to the re-invention of the mixed martial arts in the mid to late 90s.

But if you’re interested in the history of the martial arts, I suggest you study Hoplology (the study of the origin of the martial arts) and read about a gentleman named Don Draeger.

never again united

mixed martial arts originated in the united states in 1993 by the organization now known as UFC the gracie’s brought bjj to the u.s. and dominated every other style and the other martial artists realized that if they intermingled the fighting styles it makes for a better all around fighter

To the best of my knowledge, the first mixed martial art is:

Bartitsu

It was developed between 1898 and 1902 in England by E.W. Barton-Wright. After working in Japan as an engineer, Barton-Wright had brought some Japanese martial artists to London and introduced the west to Judo and Jujitsu.

Bartitsu incorporates:
Japanese Judo,
Japanese Jujitsu,
English Boxing,
French Savat,
La Canne (the cane/stick method of Professor Pierre Vigny) and
Schwingen (Swiss wrestling.)

Barton-Wright put them all together as a discipline and gave his name to the new martial art of Bartitsu.

Bartitsu was “a martial art for gentlemen” and The Bartitsu Club in London was “a place in which to be seen.”

Be that as it may…
Bartitsu was also popular among the militant London Suffragettes!

EDIT:
Don’t confuse “mixed martial arts” (no capital letters) with “MMA”!
MMA is an AMERICAN phenominon…

It’s YOUR speech — take the information and do whatever you want with it! Just because it is a speech does not necessarily mean that it has to be sombre, scholarly and educational…
It could be light, humorous, critical, ironic or presented in whatever attitude you would like to make it “stand out” from all of the other speeches.

Whatever you do… don’t make it BORING!
“Boring” lost me points when I was in speech class.

MMA as you know it today is its own martial art that started in america in the 1990’s. UFC was invented to put martial artists against each other to see what the most dominant form was. it would be a martial artist from ONE martial art vs another eg; Judo vs. Boxing or Sambo vs. Tae Kwon Do or Muay Thai vs. Jeet Kune Do etc. there were 3 rules when UFC first started

1. must be a 1 on 1
2. no eyepoking
3. no weapons

there were no gloves, no timed rounds (the fight went til one guy lost)
but they were going broke so they had to commercialize like the WWE and boxing so rounds, gloves, & rules were added.
style of martial arts like Pankration were similar to nowadays MMA but they had little submissions. it was basicly wrestling and kickboxing

Technically, all styles alive today are mixed martial arts as they are all combinations of other martial arts and have been around for thousands of years. As for modern MMA… no comment.

Well if you mean the modern UFC inspired MMA, I would say it mainly originated from Brazil, in the form of the “Vale Tudo” NHB matches.

The Gracies brought watered down “Vale Tudo” from Brazil to the US in the form of the first UFC (they were heavily involved in the creation of the UFC). From there it exploded.

It’s very hard to pin point exactly where it started but as some have said on here the gRacies first brought it into the public eye when they started the UFC. Was this where it started? I doubt it to be honest. There was a very good discussion about this over on if i can find the link i will post it.

Goof luck.
