Would it be wise to learn mixed-martial arts before USMC boot camp?

Mixed Martial Arts
Chi-City asked:

I leave for boot camp in October, and I want to be as well-prepared as possible. Would joining a MMA academy be worth my time? I don’t want to get my butt kicked when I go, I would rather stand out as being a good fighter. Any marines out there, do you wish that you had learned a martial art before going?

Your idea is very very unnecessary. But if you feel you need to do it then do whatever makes you happy.

You are trained while in boot camp in their ways. And the training is very basic. There is no need to be a master MMA.

USMC boot camp is very different than it used to be. You will not get your butt kicked at least not by a drill sergent.

You will be trained to fight in boot camp to Military standards, but I can tell you that later after boot camp in some MOS’s they will teach you martial arts.

So if you want to do the class now it would be just because you wanted to do it, not because you will need it for boot camp. You will not need it for boot camp.

Good Luck to you.

It wouldn’t hurt to learn MMA before recruit training, then again, it’s not going to be the one factor that’s going to determine whether you are going to succeed or fail recruit training. You aren’t going to get your butt kicked when you go through boot camp because you aren’t going to really fight anyone in boot camp. You will be under too much stress and have little time to start petty fights. During Boot Camp, you will be working as a team and as the training progresses, the Drill Instructors will encourage team work. Trust me, you also won’t be fighting any Drill Instructors either. No matter how tall or stronger you are compared to them, You will fear your drill Instructors. Also you learn MCMAP ( Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) during Boot Camp where you will learn hand to hand combat techniques with other recruits. It has colored belt system as well (Tan, Grey, Green. Brown, Black with various degrees). Learning MMA will help you get into shape though.
