Should Mixed Martial Arts be an Olympic Sport?

Mixed Martial Arts
Doug asked:

I think having MMA in the Olympics would be awesome. It would get the closest thing to the Pankration event in the ancient olympics.

I don’t believe it has been around long enough. It is still in its infancy compared to other sports. Look at golf, it still doesn’t have an olympic presence…

Yes, that would be a great event to watch.

That one would be difficult to do. Every MMA match is like a mini-war. Both sides get beaten up so much. And with all the medical suspensions, I don’t think anyone would be able to fight in a two-week tournament.

It would be awesome but it would be hard to manage. Look at DREAM, it is a tournament style bracket and look how many fighters that have to drop out from the injuries sustained in previous matches. it would be cool, but back to back matches is very hard to do.

And then we can have caged death matches. And then one day, if we are lucky, we can have Thunderdome in the Olympics. I just shed a little tear at the thought of it I am so happy.

Yes!! It would be one of the most interesting Olympic events if it ever happened.

But as Ben H said, they would still have to make the regulations and keep things in order.

I believe it should. Its highly athletic, and it follows olympic roots of combative sports. And pankration was just their form of wrestling at the time. Only problem is that it would have to be tournament style. Which is extremely hard on fighters. Plus it would be alot more spectator friendly than badminton and ping pong. Common! BADMINTON?! Might as well approve air hockey or darts as a sport.

If you’ve watched any of the “combat” sports you’ll notice the rules are very different, it’s not so much about physically beating up your opponent but about scoring points which indicate that your better technically.

If they wanted “bloodsports” they would have the boxers go without headgear and the fencers with real rapiers.

In my opinion MMA doesn’t have the history and isn’t a defined techique in itself, it draws off of many older sports.

Yes it would be like the UFC in its infancy where the fighters had to fight through tournament. They had to fight through preliminaries and then through the semi-finals and then the finals. I think it should take place over the course of a month rather than 1 night or a few weeks. The most durable and well conditioned fighters would rise to the top. I will be waiting for that day!

Yes. It’s boxing and wrestling plus kicking. It would be the ultimate showdown mono y mono

I think it would be cool to have it as an Olympic sport but it is probably best that it isn’t because that would mean these fighters would have to fight multiple times in less then a month. The MMA is a sport where rest and recovery is really needed. Look at the Olympic version of boxing, those guys are wearing protective headgear so they can compete multiple times.

From the amount of injuries that occur in MMA, it is probably best that it stays out of the Olympics.
